SNA was proud to host University of
Louisville Professor Tracy K’Meyer, author
of To Live Peaceably Together: The American
Friends Service Committee’s Campaign for
Open Housing, at our June 4, 2022,
breakfast. K’Meyer related the story of how
the American Friends Service Committee
(AFSC), a Quaker social action organization,
and the United Auto Workers union cooperated
in the early 1950s to build Sunnyhills, an
intentionally integrated community, to
provide housing for the Black and white
workers at the Milpitas Ford factory—one of
the first interracial housing developments
in the nation. Copies of her book are
available from the Neighborhood Association
and The Milpitas Historical Society.
